Drawing on, and indeed radicalizing, this discourse of freedom, individualism, and self-transformation, the American and European alternative spiritualities within which Buddhism was often interpreted tilted heavily toward this individualist model of spiritual fulfillment and liberation. These movements often cast the social, communal, and institutional as oppressive, not just in terms of overtly political power but also in terms of the mental and spiritual freedom of the individual, insofar as the restrictive powers of society were seen to condition not only social behavior but consciousness and the spirit itself.
